Warner Blitz 2005 -- The First California Odonata Blitz -- September 9 through 11, 2005

In mid-September 2005, seven intrepid souls ventured into the far northeast corner of California to participate in the first ever California Odonata Blitz. The trip was inspired by the Aeshna Blitzes organized annually by Oregon odonate enthusiasts. We camped at Cave Lake Campground in the north Warner Mountains and explored the surrounding countryside. Temperatures ranged from freezing to 55°F. Though it was unseasonably cold and though the ode action was sometimes slow, everyone had a great time. This web page contains photographs, links, and other material related to the blitz. Also found here is a very nice article on the blitz prepared by Kathy Biggs and soon to be submitted to the journal "Argia."

Six of us met in the town of McArthur, on Friday morning, 9 September. (Tim Manolis showed up at the camp later that evening.) We caravanned northeasterly on Highway 299, making our first stop in Adin, a small community just inside Modoc County. The red star in the upper right of the below map shows the approximate location of Cave Lake Campground, our final destination.

This map shows the campground location (red star) and general vicinity of Goose Lake and the northern Warner Mountains.
